The question was: what is prayer? ¿Qué es la oración?
The question was: what is prayer?
Just like meditation we need to distinguish between prayer as a state and prayer as means.
Prayer is a state of our being in which we receive the transcendent spirit of God and transform it as our own flesh and blood and give to our neighbours as a gift of love. It is just like a transistor which receives the magno-electric ways and transforms them into sound waves. Prayer as a state is 24/24 hours of the day. St.Paul said, pray always. Christ said, ‘watch and pray’. All other forms of prayer are means to bring one to that state of prayer.
The purpose of all prayers is to purify our ego. It is to take us from ‘I’ to ‘God’. From ‘my life’ to ‘God’s life’. From ‘my actions’ to ‘God’s actions’. The most profound form of prayer is when we are able to say,’ not my will, let thy will be done’. Jesus was in the constant state of prayer. In the difficult moments of his life, he always said, ‘ not my will, let thy will be done’.
prayer is to allow God to live in us and work in and through us. Jesus Christ said: the works which I do are not my own but the Father who dwells in me does his work’.
